Atrial septal defect – A congenital heart defect where there is an abnormal opening between the two atria. This leads to some oxygenated blood from the left atrium being mixed with the oxygen depleted blood in the right atrium, this increases the amount of blood to the lungs. If the hole is small, problems may not begin to arise until adulthood. Symptoms include frequent respiratory infections in children, palpitations, difficulty breathing and shortness of breath with activity.
