Treatment of swollen veins in the anus (haemorrhoids)

Haemorrhoids are enlarged veins in the lower section of the anal canal. They result from an increase in pressure causing the veins in the anus to expand and bulge. The main causes of haemorrhoids (also known as piles) are chronic coughing, constipation and pregnancy. There are two main types of haemorrhoids; internal and external. Symptoms include lumps in or around the anus, anal aches and pains, and bright red blood on toilet paper or in the toilet.
